It really does seem that not many care about what is happening between these two countries. For any of you who are in a trance over the Olympics, and have not been paying attention to important world events, then you might not know about the war going on against Georgia and Russia.
According to some sources, this actually isn’t a recent event. Some of you may know that Georgia was once apart of the USSR, which after it’s fall shrunk in size and is basically what we call Russia today. The USSR was other super-power alongside the United States, which brought about the Cold War. Ever since those tense years Russia and the United States just can’t seem to get along, and will most likely never will. Even with organizations like the United Nations, or events like the G8 summit – which brings these two powerhouses together – these two countries just seem to not always get along.
So why is there war between these two countries now? Well, the majority of the media is telling you this: there is a breakway region of Georgia which is not even internationally recognized. Russia, in it’s quest to become as big as it use to be, basically gave these people citizenship in Russia, Russian passports, and basically though in their whole culture. Supposedly though, Georgia was attempting to basically have a type of cultural revolution; to basically bring this defucted group back together with Georgia again. Russia – it’s emotional self – seen this as a threat to it’s people (they believe that these people are citizens of Russia) and now has decided to attack Georgia to preserve it’s people.
Oh, well I guess you think that is a reasonable idea? Wrong. Georgia is one of our greatest allies, especially in the region in which it is in. After becoming it’s own independent nation, and being recognized on an international level, they installed a democracy, and became the Republic of Georgia. Us Americans believe in spreading the freedoms in which democracy promises to it’s citizens, and that’s why the U.S. and Georgia see each other as great allies, and have been helping each other out. Even Georgia sent troops to Iraq to help us Americans, along with other coalition troops such as Britain and Italy.
Georgia has been helping us out a lot, and what do we do to help them in their time of crises? Oh, well we promise to use our transportation to take the majority, possibly all, of Georgia’s military back to Georgia so it can fight, and hopefully stop invading Russia. (That’s right, Russia is invading another country)
But what really is all this fighting about? Well, some believe it is what many people are fighting about these days: oil. That’s right, Russia wants to become the superpower that holds the power to manipulate the oil, especially the oil that drives the majority of Europe. With that much control, and opposition to Russia would mean that your country is in risk of their power being turned off. Now your country is stuck, with no energy, and possibly Russia breathing down your throat about to invade you too. Wouldn’t that just be fun?
Georgia actually has a pipeline running through it’s country, which runs through three countries including Georgia. This oil pipeline is seen by the Russians as competition, and we all know how competition is preceived in Russia: there is none. Matter of fact, it was already known that Russia had plan to sabotage this pipeline. Well, here it is, the biggest sabotage one could see – war. Actually, Russia actually tried to bomb this pipe line already in this war going on. So, is this really about an unnoticed breakaway region, or oil? You decide.
While your deciding, think of this. Many in Georgia right now are wondering where the Americans are. They are baffled at the fact that they helped America out, but yet the Americans aren’t really helping them out. I know, I know, militiristic action wouldn’t be the best option, or really an option at all unless we want to start World War 3, but it seems all that we have done right now is told Russia how bad it is, and toturn away from what it is doing, and go home. Like that is really going to work against big old bad Russia.
So, what should we do? How about we help out Georgia “secretly”. It is now known that if it wasn’t for the help by the United States to Afghanistan when the USSR tried to take control of it, we would still probably be seeing the USSR, much bigger than it was then. That was the time of the Cold War, were basically the leaders of both Russia and the United States had their fingers pressed on the nuclear bomb button, ready to set it off to attack each other, and many feared that soon that would happen. But thankfully that never did, and we never really got into a war with the USSR. We helped out people, but never got involved, which brings us back to what our forefathers taught us: to not become entangled in international affairs.
While everyone is having fun watching the Olympics in Communist China, let us all just keep ignoring a new war that has sprung upon us, one that might eventually lead into a bigger problem.
*Update* It seems now that Russia is returning back to where it came from, but is the damage already done? The pipeline was already shut off due to an attack on it by others, but it is also believed that the Russians did more damanged to it too. By the way, this pipeline accounts for 1% of the worlds oil. It may not seem much, but at least it is carrying something.

The Russians are apparently breaking the cease fire. “There is no cease-fire,” President Saakashvili of the Republic of Georgia. I think that he, himself, said it best: “Where there is Russia, there is blood.”
